The Last Day of “Fall”

The Last Day of "Fall"

Well, it’s a good thing we got outside yesterday. In true Wisconsin tradition, the last beautiful day of fall was crushed and defeated by a miserable, rainy, cold-enough-to-freeze-snot day today. But… it’s not all bad. Around mid-afternoon, amidst much thunder and lightning to add to the drama, the rain changed to ice pellets and snow, and now our yard is covered with about 2 to 3 inches of wet snow. The snow plow has been by our street twice now, piled high with salt or sand or whatever they put down to keep people on the road.
We ventured out to Sheboygan’s new monument to avarice (the new walmart super center) this morning to pick up toilet paper and envelopes to ship some stuff I’d sold online. It must have been the temporary lull between the mob that came for the opening four days ago and the mob that’ll be there on Saturday, thinking they’d waited out the opening rush. As we walked in the doors, I could hear Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber …”Stuuuuuuffff Maaaaart!” (reference to Veggie Tales’ Madame Blueberry video, for the unenlightened). It is quite massive.
In celebration of my resourcefulness (I made $90 selling some baby stuff online), I treated myself to a peppermint mocha via Starbucks’ drive-thru (a godsend to sleep-deprived mothers everywhere –you don’t even have to leave the car…). Yes, Sheboygan finally got a Starbucks, too –conveniently located just around the corner from Stuff Mart, so you can dump all the money you saved by buying stuff made in China by sweatshop labor into an overpriced coffee at Starbucks, thereby once again thwarting two categories of small local business in two stops in one day. Talk about efficiency! Wendell Barry would be so disappointed in me (I’m hanging my head in shame now…). If he knew me. Oh well.
On the small, local coffee shop front, though, the old bakery in Cedar Grove was turned into a really wonderful coffee shop in the last month or two, and I finally got a chance to check it out this week. It’s really great to have something in there again. That old empty bakery building really was depressing, especially since they still had the old sign up for, what, three years? At least. We’ll be back next Thursday. They have a kids’ story time weekly, so Sam and I can take the two preschool ones and maybe sit and drink coffee (or whatever it is that Sam drinks –he doesn’t do coffee) together without having to ship them somewhere else. Sounds good to me. I hear the local pizza place there is actually holding its own against Pizza Ranch here, so apparently good things are happening again in Cedar Grove.
Well, I guess that’s about it for news here. Not much deep thought happening today, just enjoying seasons again, and (…here comes the snow plow scraping its way down the street again –I love that sound) settling in to life here again.
